The moving checklist

• Compare moving companies or van rentals
• Set your moving date
• Check your tenancy agreement and arrange notice
• Declutter and sell or donate unwanted items
• Arrange moving helpers and ask friends
• Check school, nursery or childcare arrangements, if relevant
• Arrange transfers or cancellations for electricity, gas, internet and phone contracts

• Set up mail forwarding
• Arrange a reserved parking zone if needed; your moving company may also arrange this
• Get boxes and packing materials; compare prices with supplies offered by your moving company
• Agree on the key handover in writing
• Inform your neighbours

• Disassemble furniture where possible
• Pack and label boxes by room
• Keep important documents and valuables separate
• Defrost the fridge and freezer
• Use up remaining food
• Prepare plants and pets for the move
• Keep tools, chargers and cleaning supplies within reach
• Pack a bag for your first night
• Arrange food and drinks for your helpers

• Check the stairwell for existing damage and take photos
• Record electricity, gas and water meter readings
• Empty the letterbox and remove your nameplate
• Check, clean and photograph the entire home
• Complete a handover report with your landlord
• Hand over all keys
• Clarify the deposit and its repayment in writing

• Check the stairwell and home for existing damage and take photos

• Check and clean the stairwell after the move

• Complete residence registration with the relevant authority
• Update your address with your employer, bank, insurers and other important organisations
• Check your ORF contribution details and other relevant Austrian services
• Check your vehicle registration address, if relevant
• Request the return of your old home’s deposit
• Keep moving receipts and invoices
• Pass on, sell or dispose of moving boxes
• Review your moving company
